The Biggest Animals Kingdom and in The World | Porcupine | A porcupine is one of the 29 species of rodent belonging to the families Erethizontidae (genera: Coendou, Sphiggurus, Erethizon, Echinoprocta and Chaetomys) or Hystricidae (genera: Atherurus, Hystrix and Trichys). Porcupines vary in size considerably: Rothschild's Porcupine of South America weighs less than a kilogram (2.2 lbs (1.00 kg), the crested porcupine in Italy, Sicily, North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa grow to more than 27 kg (60 lbs). The eleven Old World porcupines tend to be very large, and have peaks that are clustered. The New World porcupines evolved their spines independently (through convergent evolution) and are more akin to a number of other families of rodents than those of the Old World porcupines.
Porcupines occupy a short distance of habitats in tropical and temperate Asia, Southern Europe, Africa, North and South. Porcupines live in forests, deserts, rocks and slopes. Some New World porcupines live in trees, but Old World porcupines stay on the rocks. Porcupine quills have recently inspired a new type of needle.
